The maximum rational exploitation of the hydroelectric potential of a river basin essentially depends on the exploration method applied. In the absence of a systematic, comprehensive and reliable methodology, only a partial, less profitable and less viable exploitation of the basin’s potential is possible. This is the most frequent situation in Mexico and worldwide.

It is possible to propose, implement and test a methodology for the systematic prospection of the hydroelectric potential of river basins that maximizes the exploitation of their potential by determining the optimal distribution of heads, or elevation differences, along each reach of the river network, taking into account energy and economic criteria, while minimizing negative environmental and social impacts. This will be demonstrated in the proposed research.
